Keeping up with Rivers of Steel: New Staff

When Rivers of Steel acquired the Explorer riverboat and took on the management of the former RiverQuest programs late in 2016, it heralded a new era for our organization in terms of exciting programming and opportunities.

Immediately Rivers of Steel’s ranks grew with the hiring of Captain Ryan O’Rourke and Senior Deckhand Terry Stockline, along with a number of part-time boat crew and teachers. Shortly thereafter, Christine Statzer was hired as Administrative Services Coordinator to help manage the transition, as well as to provide the support needed to facilitate the day-to-day activities of the expanded organization.  Each of these full-time staff had formerly worked with RiverQuest.

With the generous support of Pittsburgh’s foundation community, Rivers of Steel created new positions. In early 2017, Suzi Bloom stepped into the role of Director of Education; she was formerly the Education Manager for RiverQuest and the Program Director of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers. Carly McCoy joined the team shortly thereafter as the Director of Sales and Marketing. Carly’s experience draws from her past roles with The Frick Pittsburgh, Gateway to the Arts and Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting.  The new Director of Development position was filled by Lisa Connelly, formerly Vice President of Development and Marketing for the Butler County Family YMCA.

Additionally, Adam Taylor joined Rivers of Steel as a full-time Maintenance Manager and has contributed to significant site improvements at the Carrie Blast Furnaces this year. In June, Rivers of Steel honored Controller Doug Hartman, as he entered retirement after 25 years of service.  Dan Schwartz, formerly of Sharpsville Container, was able to spend a few weeks working with Doug to get up to speed on all things financial as Rivers of Steel’s new Controller.  Finally, in August, Brianna Horan completed the team when she accepted the newly-modified position of Manager of Tourism and Visitor Experience, bringing with her considerable experience in the tourism industry, most recently as the Group Sales Manager at the Fairmont Pittsburgh hotel.
