Grants

A regional spirit of entrepreneurship gave rise to over a century of unmatched industrial and technological advances.  Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area is preserving and building upon that very same spirit by helping communities conserve their own heritage and ways of life through its grant program and technical assistance.

Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area in partnership with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Park Service invites applications from eligible organizations to apply for grants.  Projects must relate to the themes identified in the Rivers of Steel Management Action Plan and be located in the eight counties that comprise the National Heritage Area:  Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland.

Eligible organizations can apply for grants to fund either a Special Purpose Study or an Implementation Project.

A Special Purpose Study includes:

  • Development of master plans
  • Economic and marketing assessment plans
  • Archaeological and environmental surveys
  • Preservation and interpretive plans
  • Construction drawings

An Implementation Project includes:

  • Stabilization, development, rehabilitation, restoration, preservation and acquisition of historic buildings
  • Development and operation of interpretive and educational programs
